LA premiere sold out…
Telephone call from Istanbul

If you haven’t been to Istanbul before, you need to go. Now. It’s an amazing city, and this is the first time I’ve been here. We had two great screenings, one at Bilgi University on Monday, and last night at the 26th Istanbul International Film Festival. The film got a really positive response from both the audiences and the press (I was on Turkish television twice!), and I’ve had an incredible time all-around.
The one thing that astonished me is how much Helvetica there is here! Granted, I’m hypersensitive to spotting the big H, but really, it’s ridiculous here. Will post some photos at some point. And the city has an amazing energy to it, after spending four days here all sorts of ideas started bouncing around in my head about filming an indie fiction film in Istanbul…
Special thanks to everyone at the festival, it was really an honor to be part of it. And thanks to the folks at HEP, Bilgi University, the bartenders at Cesayir, Mr. Paul Marlow, and especially my fantastic guide (and Supertramp fan) Elif.
Ticket updates
A few ticket updates: Tickets for the Los Angeles premiere event at USC are now on sale. Get ‘em quick. The Istanbul Film Festival screening is sold out. Advance tickets for both Toronto screenings at Hot Docs are sold out too, but there will possibly be a limited number of “rush” tickets available at the door for each Toronto screening, get there early. The Boston Premiere at MassArt is also sold out.
Helvetica at MoMA
This Friday the Museum of Modern Art in New York will open a new exhibition: “50 Years of Helvetica” will be on display from April 6, 2007 to March 31, 2008, in the museum’s Architecture and Design Galleries on the third floor. In addition to posters and artifacts from MoMA’s collection and an original metal type font of Helvetica gifted by Lars Müller, “50 Years of Helvetica” includes Matthew Carter’s original Neue Haas Grotesk specimen book, an Experimental Jetset T-shirt, and a video excerpt from the documentary. It’s a real honor for me to be involved with MoMA on this project. If you’re in New York City anytime in the next year, be sure to pay a visit.
The International Herald Tribune did a nice story yesterday about Helvetica’s 50th, with quotes from MoMA curator Christian Larsen and Danny van den Dungen from Experimental Jetset.
